The Oregon sesquicentennial is coming to a close. It’s been an amazing experience for Sasquatcha to have been able to direct the social media strategy for our 150th year of statehood. I don’t know of any other state that has tapped into social media quite the way Oregon 150 was willing to do for our sesquicentennial. Certainly no other state has had the likes of Seski the Sasquatch, who tweeted, blogged and costarred with the governor in a YouTube video.

Perhaps the recruitment of a sasquatch shouldn’t be too big of a surprise to Oregonians though. After all, it was Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski who, as a legistlator in 1977, introduced a resolution vowing to always keep the sasquatch safe in Oregon.

“Oregon has such a diverse and intriguing history, and the sasquatch is part of that,” said Kulongoski as Seski made his debut at the Portland Rose Festival Parade.

Oregon 150 will conclude the state’s official seven-month commemoration at the end of this month. It’s been a wonderful celebration. Here are a few of the ways that social media played into the experience.

YouTube

Oregon 150 created a sesquicentennial YouTube channel and uploaded videos to help promote the celebration. These videos were then shared across other social media channels including Facebook, Twitter and Blogger. Even Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski and Seski the Sasquatch got in on the action.

Twitter

Through the use of Twitter, Oregon 150 was able to promote projects, press releases and sesquicentennial events, correspond with local media, advertise Oregon 150 merchandise, and communicate directly with Oregonians online.

Facebook

Facebook pages and ads turned out to be an extremely effective way to quickly reach Oregonians and recruit them to participate in projects. Thanks to effective audience targeting, Oregon 150 ads resulted in millions of Facebook appearances and thousands of click throughs to projects on the website, some for as little as $5 per day.

Ning

More than 200 Oregon youths joined the Oregon 150 social networking site Project 2059, where they formed regional groups and posted videos and blogs about their dreams for Oregon’s future. At summer’s end, Oregon teens gathered at Willamette University and shared their visions for Oregon’s next 50 years. Oregon State University will continue the future visioning and community action program.

Flickr

Oregon 150 uploaded and shared photos from sesquicentennial events all over the state using Flickr’s online photo management system. Photos were accessed by multiple team members for inclusion on the website, blogs, Facebook, Twitter, newsletters and print publications.

Blogger

Whoever thought we’d see the day when a bigfoot would blog? Seski the Sasquatch shared information about Oregon 150 projects, partners and events directly to thousands of online Twitter followers, Facebook friends and blog subscribers. Seski blogged, uploaded photos to Flickr, and tweeted daily during his travels across the state for the “I Am Oregonian” challenge.

The campaign was chosen by Forbes magazine as one of the Top Ten Travel Campaigns currently running in the world. Others in the top 10 included India, Jamaica, Australia, Alaska, Michigan, Virginia and Las Vegas.

Public social networks are one of the most effective ways to build a unified online community. Sasquatcha sets up and designs customized public social networks that get noticed. Our experience includes designing a popular teen social networking site where Oregon youths shared their visions for our state’s next 50 years by uploading blog and video projects. More than 200 members joined over the summer of 2009, culminating with a youth leadership summit at Willamette University. The site is now housed within the 4-H program of Oregon State University.

What does your dream social network look like? With a little coding almost anything is possible. Imagine your own site with member profiles, videos, blogs, star rating systems, forums, groups, instant messaging, personal in-boxes, music and more. - Starting at $5,000 including Network Administrator training
